Painting in the 21st Century: A Quest for exclusivity
by
Duke M. Horn
As our so-called technological progress accelerates at warp speed, the special effects available stuns the senses and leaves amateur representationalism in the dustbin of art history. There is nothing that cannot be accomplished on the computer, given enough time and programs.
Realizing we are saturated by generated visuals daily, one would be hard-pressed to invent something unique in the realm of realism. This task falls on the painter if he is to remain relevant.
I believe this task is what has led to the rise of Post-Expressionism, simply because it is easier to create something in this genre that the computer doesn’t excel in without multiple programs to get some of the effects that are indicative to the painter’s realm. Effects such as texturing and visual layering are at best, only partially achieved on a digital flat surface.
The much more difficult thing to do, in my estimation, is to come up with concepts in a style that marks a “signature” look by a given painter which is representational, yet complex enough that great difficulty and program changing would be necessary to achieve the same result in the computer.
Keeping representational painting relevant is my goal and the best way to do that is to create not only the texture and depth that 3-D movies possess but also to make concepts that employ varied painting styles in the same composition, and still harmonize and generates an “otherworldly” aura.
Hence, the continuation of my world of “Magical Realism.”
Competing with the computer in the genre of realism is a daunting task requiring much more time and effort than abstract-expressionism does on the same size canvas, given the same tools. I realize this is arguable.
Satisfaction levels with one’s work is always commensurate to the amount of effort put into the work, all talents being equal.
