Quinn attended Boston University where she received a degree in Classical Voice as well as a Master’s degree in the same. She has also penned down two books in the Italian Renaissance which details the infamous Borgia clan early years. All these books have been translated into multiple languages. From time to time, you usually get those books that are exceedingly hard to put down. Mistress of Rome is undoubtedly one of those books. The author begins this book by first introducing the reader to a young slave girl from Judea by the name of Thea. She was bought from an exceedingly rich heiress, by the name of Lepida Pollia. This story is based on the rival that goes on between these two characters throughout the book. The book begins when Lepida, is only fourteen years and decides to take a shine of the revered Gladiator, The Barbarian. The only problem is that the gladiator has his eye on Thea and Thea has her eyes on him. Lepida is enraged and thus decides to sell Thea as a slave.
Thea eventually ends up working with a brother before she eventually catches up with a great and loving master who assists her further her career and passion as a singer, while also in the process protecting her son. However, according to Thea, now Athena, she believes that she will never find peace. She, later on, catches the eye of Emperor Domitian, who is more than determined to ensure that Thea becomes her plaything. Since he is the emperor, what he usually wants he normally gets. However, unknown to many people Emperor Domitian has an exceedingly dark side; thus he enjoys bringing Athena to the brink of madness. The time that the two share is a struggle mainly on Athena’s side.
Kate Quinn takes the readers to the limits of an imaginary world that have been caught up in the wickedness of the emperor. There is backstabbing, scheming and killing as well. There are numerous characters in this book, a majority of them being hard to follow their personal lives. This novel has been written in both the first person point of view and third person point of view as well. One of the best characters in this book is Thea. She is not only strong, but she is also passionate, loyal and strong. The most colorful character is Lepida, though she is also conniving and evil as well. The hatred between Thea and Lepida sparks in many ways especially considering the fact that it influenced the way in which the lives of these characters ended.
With that said, Kate Quinn has managed to create an exceedingly rich and powerful world in this book. She writes in a descriptive and vivid way especially when she is portraying the gladiator fights, you may end up thinking you are in the thick of it. The descriptions of the jewels, clothing and their residents has also been well crafted as well. Quinn has managed to fix both facts and fiction as well into the story.
Daughters of Rome is also another excellent read in the Empress of Rome book series. The book has been set in the year of the Four Emperors. Despite the fact that there are other novels, which have been set after the rise of the Flavian dynasty, for the first time, Quinn’s novel is the first book to view things from the perspective of the four patrician women. To assist the readers in keeping everything straight, the author decided to give three of these patrician women nicknames. As the novel begins, we meet up with the main characters during Lollia’s wedding ceremony. To promote her grandfather’s business interest, Lollia has managed to endure a series of marriages. The wedding ceremony is her fourth ever and this time around she is getting married to someone who is known as old flaccid.
Later on in the book, we get to learn that Lollia was at one point married to the eldest son to Vespasian, who she has a daughter with. According to history, Lollia’s real names is Marcia Furnilla. Quinn has also done an excellent job in describing all the excesses of any Roman wedding. As the celebration continues, we get to learn that Diana, whose dad is an exceedingly famous sculptor is a young woman of free spirit who is totally obsessed with chariot racing. Marcella, on the other hand, is married to an uninspiring, miserly senator who goes by the name of Lucius, who is currently serving in the military observer’s seat.
Thus, Marcella is forced to live with Gaius her brother and social climbing, Tulia. We also get to learn that Servius has also been declared as the emperor by the senate. We also get to learn that Cornelia is married to a young aristocrat by the name of Lucius Piso, who will be named as Gabba’s successor. We also get to meet the compelling Marcus Otho. Towards the end a bloody coup eventually turns the world that they live is upside down, Marcella and Cornelia, together with their cousins must be able to maneuver carefully so as to stay alive. As Cornelia pulls herself together while trying to pick up the pieces, Marcella finds a hidden talent for influencing some of the most powerful men in Rome. Towards the end of the book, it is apparent that they can only be one emperor and one empress as well. With that said, this book is a wonderful mix of characters that have been well developed.
