Phenderson Djeli Clark is the pen name of science fiction writer and historian Dexter Gabriel. He decided to publish his non-fiction and fiction under different names so that readers of one wouldn’t get confused or disappointed by something he wrote. He has also been published under the name A. Phenderson Clark.

He was born November 6, 1971 in Queens, New York. He has lived in Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Caribbean, and Texas. He grew up mostly in Houston, Texas, and spent the early formative years in his parents’ homeland, Tobago and Trinidad.
